Steel

Cost Effective Versatility

Steel investment casting has become synonymous with low-cost, highly accurate near-net-shape metal forming. Steel castings do not include costly chrome and nickel additives typical of stainless steel, yet still manage to provide the widest range of mechanical properties of any alloy type.

We specialize in highly repeatable short production runs of carbon steel and low alloy steel investment castings in the 0 to 30 lbs range, and are capable of 100+ lbs castings.

  • Intricate, near-net shape parts achievable without machining
  • Easily convert multiple parts into single assemblies
  • Thin walls for weight reduction opportunities
  • Surface texture of 125 rms or better
  • Tolerances within +/- .005 inches per linear inch
  • Highly complex dimensional geometry

From concept to completion, PCT can meet the form, fit, and function of your design.

FORM – STEEL'S UNIQUE PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS

Both carbon steel and low alloy steel investment castings offer smooth surface finishes without the need for grinding and polishing. Low alloy steel also provides slightly greater resistance to corrosion than carbon steel and is generally 20-30% lighter.

Steel's versatility allows it to meet a wide range of ductility, toughness, tensile strength, machinability, and variable hardness.

FIT – HOW WE MAKE STEEL CASTINGS WORK FOR YOU

Compatible with a wide range of heat treating techniques for both hardening and softening, steel's versatility makes it suitable for almost any application. Certain steel casting alloys can achieve up to 62 Rockwell C with proper heating. With secondary annealing, steel can also become one of the softest metals.

Additional steel casting heating techniques include solution annealing, quench and tempering, normalizing, aging, precipitant hardening, induction hardening, carbon restoring, carbonizing, and case hardening.

FUNCTION – REAL WORLD STEEL INVESTMENT CASTING EXAMPLES

Steel's low cost, ductility, and machinability make it ideal everyday-use items common to all industries. Typical examples of steel investment castings include mass-produced products such as brackets, hinges, and levers.

Available in a wide variety of grades, steel can meet 90% of today's applications and engineering requirements.
